Activating the Crowd: Exploiting User-Item Reciprocity for Recommendation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recommender systems have always faced the problem of sparse data. In the current era, however, with its demand for highly personalized, real-time, context-aware recommendation, the sparse data problem only threatens to grow worse. Crowdsourcing, specifically, outsourcing micro-requests for information to the crowd, opens new possibilities to fight the sparse data challenge. In this paper, we lay out a vision for recommender systems that, instead of consulting an external crowd, rely on their own user base to actively supply the rich information needed to improve recommendations. We propose that recommender systems should create and exploit reciprocity between users and items. Specifically, recommender systems should not only recommend items for users (who would like to watch or buy them), but also recommend users for items (that need additional information in order that they can be better recommended by the system). Reciprocal recommendations provide a gentle incentivization that can be deployed non-invasively, yet is powerful enough to promote a productive symbiosis between users and items. By exploiting reciprocity, recommender systems can “look inwards” and activate their own user base to contribute the information needed to improve recommendations for the entire user community.

A New Similarity Measure Based on Item Proximity and Closeness for Collaborative Filtering Recommendation
Recommender systems utilize information retrieval and machine learning techniques for filtering information and can predict whether a user would like an unseen item. User similarity measurement plays an important role in collaborative filtering based recommender systems. In order to improve accuracy of traditional user based collaborative filtering techniques under new user cold-start problem a...
متن کاملA Time and Sentiment Unification Model for Personalized Recommendation
With the rapid development of social media, personalized recommendation has become an essential means to help people discover attractive and interesting items. Intuitively, users buying items online are influenced not only by their preferences and public attentions, but also by the crowd sentiment (i.e., the word of mouth) to the items. Specifically, users are likely to refuse an item whose mos...
متن کاملUse of Semantic Similarity and Web Usage Mining to Alleviate the Drawbacks of User-Based Collaborative Filtering Recommender Systems
One of the most famous methods for recommendation is user-based Collaborative Filtering (CF). This system compares active user’s items rating with historical rating records of other users to find similar users and recommending items which seems interesting to these similar users and have not been rated by the active user. As a way of computing recommendations, the ultimate goal of the user-ba...
متن کاملA comparative study of heterogeneous item recommendations in social systems
While recommendation approaches exploiting different input sources have started to proliferate in the literature, an explicit study of the effect of the combination of heterogeneous inputs is still missing. On the other hand, in this context there are sides to recommendation quality requiring further characterisation and methodological research –a gap that is acknowledged in the field. We prese...
متن کاملExploiting Social Tags in Matrix Factorization Models for Cross-domain Collaborative Filtering
Cross-domain recommender systems aim to generate or enhance personalized recommendations in a target domain by exploiting knowledge (mainly user preferences) from other source domains. Due to the heterogeneity of item characteristics across domains, content-based recommendation methods are difficult to apply, and collaborative filtering has become the most popular approach to cross-domain recom...
